Ortiz Loses Appeal, Will Serve 1-Game Suspension Friday vs. Toronto
BOSTON (CBS) -- David Ortiz has lost his appeal, and will serve his one-game suspension Friday night when the Red Sox open a three-game series in Toronto.
Ortiz was suspended back on April 21 for making contact with home plate umpire John Tumpane a few days earlier. The Sox DH was not pleased with a check swing call by third base ump Jerry Meals during a loss to the Orioles on April 19, and tossed his bat in protest. He was then ejected by Tumpane, and turned his anger towards the home plate ump, making contact in the process.
It was the 11th ejection of Ortiz's career.
In 26 games this season, Ortiz is batting .242 with four homers and 12 RBI.
