Red Sox Call Up Reliever Pat Light To Take Eduardo Rodriguez's Roster Spot
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox called up an infielder on Monday when they should have called up a reliever, a move that was even more puzzling when Xander Bogaerts didn't receive a much-needed day off in Boston's 13-7 loss to the Rays.
So on Tuesday, that reliever finally made his way to the majors in the form of righty Pat Light. The 25-year-old has made 20 appearances out of the bullpen for the Pawtucket Red Sox this season, going 5-for-5 in save opportunities with a 2.05 ERA. Light has held opposing batters to a .161 average with 32 strikeouts, keeping opponents off the scoreboard in his last 10 appearances.
Light, a supplemental round pick by Boston in 2012, made his major league debut for the Red Sox on April 26 against the Atlanta Braves, allowing two runs on two hits an inning of work. It was his only major league appearance of the season.
He'll be in St. Petersburg for Tuesday night's game against the Rays, ready to contribute to a Boston bullpen that has been taxed mightily all season. Light will take the roster spot of starter Eduardo Rodriguez, who was optioned to Triple A after allowing nine runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Rays on Monday night.
