Red Sox Activate Matt Thornton From Disabled List
BOSTON (CBS) – The Red Sox activated left-handed pitcher Matt Thornton from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, the team reported.
To make room for the left-handed reliever on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brayan Villarreal was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after Saturday's game against the Dodgers. Thornton is expected to be available for Sunday night's game in Los Angeles.
Thornton had been on the disabled list since Aug. 7 with a right oblique strain. Since Boston acquired the 36-year-old on July 12, he has posted a 0-1 record with a 2.16 ERA in 10 games. Overall this season, Thornton is 0-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 50 games between the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox.
Villarreal made one appearance for the Red Sox after being recalled on Monday, walking the only batter he faced. Boston acquired the 26-year-old from Detroit as part of a three-team, seven-player deal on July 30. He was reassigned to Pawtucket.
