Red Cross: Harsh Winter Leads To Decreased Blood Donations
BOSTON (CBS) - Several snowstorms have led to a decrease in collected blood donations this winter, according to the American Red Cross of Massachusetts.
"We are urging blood and platelet donors to help restock our shelves after snowstorms, ice and freezing temperatures caused nearly 800 blood drive cancellations in 27 states in February and March," reads a message posted on the organization's Facebook page.
The cancellations have resulted in more than 16,300 uncollected blood and platelet donations, according to the Red Cross website.
"Eligible blood and platelet donors who live in areas where it is safe to travel are encouraged to make an appointment to give now, and those in areas affected by severe weather are asked to make and keep appointments when it is safe to do so," reads the website.
The organization says that it needs donors with blood types O negative, A negative and B negative and they are encouraged to donate double red cells where available.
