Raynham Firefighters Battle Flames In Extreme Heat
RAYNHAM (CBS) - Hot weather complicated matters for firefighters as they attempted to put out a fire at a home on Elm Street East in Raynham Wednesday.
The Cape Cod style house had flames shooting from the roof when firefighters arrived. By the time the flames were out the home was charred.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion. Raynham Fire Chief James Januse said temperatures above 90 degrees made it more difficult to fight the flames.
"It's very difficult. That's why we brought in these additional communities mutual aid to give us a hand, because the guys don't last long in this weather," Januse explained.
An extended family was inside the house eating dinner when the fire started. Dorothy O'Daniel is staying at the home that belongs to her sister. O'Daniel says they heard a knock and that's what alerted them something was wrong.
After being turned back by intense flames at the front door, O'Daniel, her brother and her sister and brother in law escaped out the back door. The family pets also escaped unharmed.
"A firefighter had to be taken to the hospital so we're worried about him too, but we're so glad to be alive," she said.
