Ray Lewis Forgives Anna Burns Welker For Facebook Post
BOSTON (CBS) - Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis said he holds nothing against Anna Burns Welker -- the wife of Patriots receiver Wes Welker -- for a Facebook post she made following Baltimore's AFC Championship win over New England.
After the Ravens advanced to the Super Bowl with a 28-13 win at Gillette Stadium, Burns Welker posted the following on her Facebook page:
"Proud of my husband and the Pats. By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis' Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!"
The post was deleted, but was up long enough to create a bit of a stir. She apologized for what she wrote, and on Monday, Lewis accepted that apology.
"I've always been a firm believer of the Good Book, and the Good Book always confirms even a fool is counted wise until he opens he or she mouth," Lewis said from New Orleans on Monday. "And sometimes people just say silly stuff. And they say it out of emotion. And sometimes you need to let the game take care of the game. We lost up there last year, and I didn't hear one teammate say anything about nobody there because we have respect for that team, that they won it fair and square."
"For her to come out and say what she said, listen, I truly forgive her, and I have no hard feelings against her at all, but I believe people just make mistakes and say foolish things sometimes," he said.
Burns Welker was referencing Lewis' involvement in a post-Super Bowl fight in Atlanta in January 2000, which resulted in the murder of two men. Murder charges against Lewis were dropped when he agreed to testify against the other defendants in exchange for a lesser charge. Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for misleading police while being questioned in the hours after the murders.
