Rare White Alligator Arrives At Attleboro Zoo

ATTLEBORO (CBS) - A rare white alligator has arrived at an Attleboro zoo for the summer.

The alligator, who came from a farm in St. Augustine, Florida will be introduced to the public this weekend at Capron Park Zoo.

There are two million gators in the world and only 200 are white.

Capron Park Zoo Director Jean Benchimol says they all came from a group of 18 hatchlings found in 1987.

We don't know who carried the genes, we don't even know if they're still breeding," she said. "We do know that we have some in captivity."

Benchimol says it's a good thing that the white alligators are in captivity, because they probably could not survive the wild when they are young and small.

"There's no camouflage so they would hide all the time and hope nothing sees them," she explained.

The white alligator will be at the zoo for four months.
