Rabid Coyote Bites Groveland Man
GROVELAND (CBS) – Police in Groveland are warning residents after two coyote attacks.
It was Monday night when Jon McPherson was carrying his four year old daughter Kaelyn to the house when suddenly he felt something.
"It came up behind me and got me in the back of the leg," McPherson said. "It felt like a dog bite, I turned around and it was a coyote."
His first concern was for his little girl
"I put her down and did one of these to block her in and started walking backwards to get her to this door behind me so she could get out of the way," McPherson said.
The aggressive coyote wasn't backing down.
"I took a swing at it with the groceries, two two-liter bottles kind of hit it in the neck area," he says. "It didn't really phase it."
"Definitely nervous it was staring right at me wasn't backing down I had no idea at that point if it was going to attack."
Finally the coyote backed off a bit allowing Jon and Kaelyn to get to the porch. Groveland police believe the same coyote bit a different man not far away.
"Coyotes usually run from humans," Groveland Police Sgt. Dwight McDonald said. "So we certainly consider that indicative of rabid behavior."
As for Jon, he'll be looking over his shoulder while the coyote is still on the loose.
