Police Chief Paul Keenan said the two workers were stocking shelves in an aisle near the end of their overnight shift, when one stabbed the other in a fight.

"The wounds were extensive. They were a leg wound. It looked like he had a cut in femoral artery area, so there was an extensive amount of blood on the scene," Keenan told reporters.

The victim, 37-year-old Corey Fredrick of Cambridge, was rushed to Boston Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The other worker, 36-year-old Jamal Boyd of Mattapan, ran off, police said, but eventually came back to the store and was arrested.

There's no word yet what led to the fight.

Boyd is charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery by means of a dangerous a weapon. He is expected to be arraigned Friday morning in Quincy District Court.

The store was closed for several hours but re-opened Thursday afternoon.
