Quincy Neighbor Videotaped Officers With Guns Drawn Raiding Matanov Apartment
QUINCY (CBS) – A Quincy resident who wants to remain anonymous says he was on his way to work when he saw the SWAT team and police rush in to capture Khairullozhon Matanov in this Quincy apartment Friday.
"It looked like a movie scene. As soon as the third one pulled up they had their guns drawn, their M-16s, and they went to work," said the neighbor, who videotaped the activity with his cellphone.
The 23-year-old native of Kyrgyzstan has been charged with obstructing the Boston Marathon bombings investigation. He is now being held in the Plymouth House of Correction.
"I called the police and wanted to find out what the situation was across the street. And they said it was precautionary," the neighbor said. In federal court, Matanov answered to charges of lying to police and concealing evidence.
Former Boston police commissioner and WBZ security analyst Ed Davis said that next week Matanov's lawyers will argue that he is not a flight risk and ask the judge to allow him to go free.
"I think it's doubtful, considering his foreign roots and the fact he can move around freely, that the judge will simply release him, especially in the federal system," Davis said.
Matanov came to the United States in 2010 on a student visa. He now faces charges that could put him in prison for up to 44 years.
The Quincy neighbor said what he witnessed was unsettling and wants to see justice prevail.
"Allowing these people into the country is the part that's starting to get me annoyed," the neighbor said.
Mantanov is due back in federal court Wednesday.
