Quincy Man Charged With Attempted Abduction
QUINCY (CBS) - A Quincy man is charged with attempted abduction after an incident at a bus stop where a woman claims he tried to force her to get into his car.
Anna Masalin says she was sitting at the bus stop, when she saw a green Toyota drive around the block four times, each time slowing down as it passed her. The fourth time, she says Mark Levin, 50, got out of the car.
Masalin says Levin told her to get into his vehicle. When she refused he became more aggressive and demanding.
"He came up toward me and just started yelling, 'just get in. I'll let you drive if you want to, Just get in the car,'" she says.
Masalin says she remembered her parents advice to trust her gut, so she took out her phone to call police. That's when Levin drove away.
The 20-year-old college student says she believes he wanted to kidnap her.
Masalin's description of the car including the license plate number lead Quincy Police to Levin's home on Wall Street.
Sgt. Jen Tapper says Levin has been on their radar for years. They have had at least five complaints from other women claiming Levin made them feel uncomfortable by offering them rides. Police had warned him to stop, but the cases never rose to the level of an arrest until now.
"This case that happened on the 18th was the most aggressive. Prior reports have been that they were uncomfortable that he wanted them to get into the car," Tapper said.
Levin works as a part time cab driver. According to police, he told them he was offering rides to be nice.
A woman who lives with Levin but refused to identify herself tells WBZ, that Levin has never hurt anyone. She says he has mild special needs and would not try to kidnap women.
Levin had aroused the suspicions of neighbors for several years. They claim he would walk outside partially naked and exposing himself.
Quincy Police are contacting other cities to see if they have had similar complaints about Levin. They are concerned that his work as a cab driver would put him in contact with many unsuspecting women.
Levin is being held without bail pending a Dangerousness Hearing in Quincy District Court. He has denied any wrongdoing.
As for Maselin, she is glad she was aware of her surroundings and that Levin didn't target someone else.
"He could have done it to someone else. someone smaller and younger and less able to think and know what to do," she said.
