Questions remain after Lynn city hall shooting
Authorities have released the name of the man who attacked a police officer outside Lynn City Hall, grabbed the officer's gun, and fatally shot himself, but are still trying to figure out why he did it.
A spokeswoman for the Essex district attorney's office identified the man in Thursday's shooting as 27-year-old Marc Gaston of Lynn.
Police say Gaston approached the officer from behind while he was on a work detail and attacked him unprovoked.
A utility worker intervened and while the three struggled, the suspect got hold of the officer's gun and shot himself.
Patrolman Patrick McGuire received cuts and bruises during the scuffle and was treated at a local hospital.
McGuire, a 16-year veteran, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
