TOPSFIELD - A new pumpkin champion was named at the Topsfield Fair Friday, with a Massachusetts pumpkin taking home the top prize.

Steve Connolly, from Sharon, won the 40th annual All New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off. His giant pumpkin topped the scales at 2,211 pounds. This is Connolly's fourth time winning the contest, having previously won in 2000, 2010 and 2016. The fair said he's now the winningest grower in the contest's history.

Despite the massive weight, the pumpkin didn't break the fair's record, which was set in 2022 with a pumpkin that weighs 2,480 pounds.

For those visiting the fair, the giant pumpkin can be viewed in the Fruits and Vegetables Building from now until the end of the fair on Oct. 14.

The Topfield Fair, which has been running for 206 years, kicked off Friday with thousands of people attending the annual fall festivity. Whether it was taking part in the pumpkin weigh-in or sampling delicacies like apple crisp or fried dough, there was a lot going on Friday night.

Organizers and police are also asking people to be careful if they're purchasing tickets, as there are scams online for fake tickets.
