Pro-Pot Group Warns Against "Excessive Taxation" Of Marijuana
BOSTON (AP) — A group pushing for a 2016 ballot question to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Massachusetts is warning against imposing what they call excessive taxation on the sale of pot.
Bay State Repeal says they welcome a bill filed by more than a dozen Massachusetts lawmakers that would allow marijuana to be taxed and regulated like alcohol.
The bill would also let adults 21 years or older grow limited amounts of marijuana.
But the pro-marijuana group says that if taxes and fees are too high, they will force up the cost of legal pot and help maintain a marijuana black market in the state.
They say that could have the unintended consequence of giving minors the ability to continue purchasing marijuana illegally.
Gov. Charlie Baker has said he opposes legalizing marijuana.
