Pre-Civil War Era Shipwreck Found At Nantasket Beach
NANTASKET (CBS) - It's a mystery from the deep, timbers from a long ago shipwreck uncovered on Nantasket Beach in Hull.
"Pretty exciting its historical," Hull resident Megan Doll said.
The ship was discovered last week.
The state's underwater archaeologist has identified it as a pre-Civil War era cargo ship.
"It's terribly exciting. This is the first ship wreck discovered in a very long time," Executive Director of the Hull Life Saving Museum Peter Wild said.
Wild says he believes this historic winter knocked away several feet of sand to uncover the ship.
The buried boat is getting a lot of attention from beach goers in the area.
"There will not any treasure to be found. It was probably stripped clean at the time," Hull resident Greg Whalen said.
Wild says he hopes people enjoy seeing the ship but wants people to stay away and not take any pieces until they identify it.
