Potholes appear in roads across Massachusetts once again, with drivers shelling out for repairs
It's that time of year again when potholes begin to appear all across Massachusetts and auto shops are hard at work fixing cracks and dents in cars.
There's a lot of straightening going on at The Wheel Fix in Waltham. Tire after tire that has fallen victim to potholes that are now popping up everywhere are under repair.
Auto shops seeing lots of damage
"It's kind of like if you're walking and looking at the ground trying not to trip all the time, that's how you have to drive around here. You have to constantly go around these potholes," said driver Sabrina Learman.
At The Wheel Fix, owner Nick Cummings has seen plenty of cracks and dents lately.
"The roads aren't in the greatest condition, when new potholes pop up that people aren't really used to, big enough impact can cause this on a lot of different makes and models," said Cummings.
Most he said are repairable but some tires have to be replaced altogether. Irene Kalfon said she had to have two tires recently replaced at a cost of $500.
"I thought I had blown one, but when I stopped at the gas station he said you need two, one here, one here," said Kalfon, pointing to the right side front and rear tires.
Drivers frustrated
It's the freeze and thaw cycle that New Englanders have come to expect, but for Alec Morin, who drives for his job everyday, it's still frustrating.
"A lot of the main streets have bigger potholes that aren't covered. It affects not only the car but also the tires and everything that goes along with it," said Morin.
The Wheel Fix expects to be more than busy for some time.
"It's an evil that is consistent in Massachusetts with the conditions of the roads," said Cummings.
In Boston, drivers can report potholes to 311 by calling or going online.
