Potential Venues For Boston 2024 Olympics
BOSTON (CBS) - Now what? That's the question many people are asking after the U.S. Olympic Committee picked Boston as its bid for the 2024 Summer Games.
A lot of questions will be answered over the next year, but some potential venues are coming together.
No doubt, it's hard to visualize under a blanket of snow, but Boston's Franklin Park could end up being a prime Olympic spot, hosting equestrian events among others.
Tons of sand would be trucked in for beach volleyball on the Boston Common.
How about field hockey games at Harvard's football stadium, archery at MIT, or Dorchester Avenue transforming into the Olympic Boulevard?
Flights of fancy for now, perhaps, but come 2024, some spots make perfect sense. Like Conte Forum at Boston College or the TD Garden hosting basketball events. Or soccer matches at Gillette Stadium where the Revolution play.
But you need real vision to see Widett Circle become the Olympic Stadium itself. The area just off the expressway in Dorchester is currently home to trucking and storage, but one day it may be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Boston games.
The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is already a great venue. But the facility hosting world-class table tennis and boxing would be a new adventure.
The Charles River isn't quite up to Olympic standards, so Boston 2024 rowing events might be held on the Merrimack or Quinsigamond, relatively far from Boston.
