Postal Workers Say Closing Boston-Area Facilities Will Be Devastating
BOSTON (CBS) - Postal workers and community leaders say plans to close hundreds of facilities around the country will have a devastating impact on local communities.
A mail sorting facility in Waltham and 22 Boston area Post Offices are among those slated to close.
At the State House Wednesday, opponents argued that those closings are bad news for people who rely on the mail.
Paul Kilduff of the American Postal Workers Union says, "Closing the mail processing plants and Post Offices means residents and businesses may not receive bills, payments, prescriptions, on-line purchases and community newspapers on time."
Hundreds of local postal workers will also lose their jobs. The cuts could begin in mid-May.
