Popular Online Photo Storage Site Will Shut Down In July
BOSTON (CBS) - Chrissie Montgomery has almost 7,000 photos on the Kodak Gallery website. The Methuen mom uses the popular service to store all of her pictures online. But, all those precious memories will soon be moving. Kodak Gallery is shutting down in July and its five billion photos will be transferred to Shutterfly. Shutterfly says, "It may take time for your photos to appear..." because "the process may take several months to complete." Meaning: no online access to your pictures this summer.
"I'm a little nervous to see if all my photos make it from point A to point B," says Montgomery. But the experts say customers can rest assured that this online transition from Kodak Gallery to Shutterfly should go smoothly.
"So far, it has proven much more reliable than what you and I do storing stuff on our hard drive," say Harry West when talking about the cloud storage sites like these offer. West is the CEO of Continuum and helps other companies find focus. He's confident that Shutterfly will remain a free service. But, he does wonder if the site will be able to compete with powerhouses Facebook and Instagram. "Why? Because they are about sharing photos not just storing, that's where the money is."
Another change for Kodak Gallery customers: Shutterfly does not offer full-resolution downloads. Instead you'll have to pay for an archive DVD. Kodak Gallery closes on July 2nd. All customers should receive an email this month on how to link up your Kodak Gallery account with Shutterfly.
