Police, SWAT Team Search For Manchester, NH Bank Robber
MANCHESTER, N.H. (CBS) --- Police in Manchester are looking for a bank robber who ended up causing the SWAT team to move in to a local neighborhood.
After robbing a Bank of America branch on Massabesic Street Monday morning, the suspect was followed by witnesses who saw him in a backyard near Valley and Jewett Streets.
Authorities went door to door looking for the suspect.
"They went room to room," said Valley Street resident Bernice Gilbeau who said police searched her apartment.
Neighbors were told to stay inside while the search was on.
"It was just really scary," said Tamara Dennis who also lives on Valley Street. "They told us to stay in the house and keep the doors locked and stay away from the windows."
Bank tellers tell police that the man, who was seen on surveillance video, cut the line and had a large knife. He shoved a backpack with a brown suede bottom through the first teller window and when the teller said she had no money, he shoved it at the teller next door who filled the bag with cash.
"Nobody was hurt," said Manchester Police Lt. Maureen Tessier. "One of the bank tellers had some anxiety over the incident and did go to the hospital for that anxiety but there were no physical injuries."
The suspect, who was wearing a ski mask and white garden-style gloves when he robbed the bank, was last seen in a back yard but he vanished.
Police could not track him down.
Hallsville Elementary School was placed in lock down during the search.
The suspect is described as a white male or light skinned black male, about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
The same bank branch was robbed in March and while there are similarities in the two crimes, police are not sure if the same man is responsible.
In the March incident, the bank was robbed around the same time and the suspect also had a back pack. He also wore white gloves. But he had a gun rather than a knife. And the back pack had a YWCA logo on the front.
