Police Officer Shoots & Injures Two People In Springfield
SPRINGFIELD (CBS/AP) - Two people have been shot by police in a tornado-ravaged area of Springfield.
Originally a police source told WBZ-TV that one person was killed. Police later stated that was not the case and the injuries are non-life threatening.
The shooting happened somewhere in the area of Williams and Main Streets.
Police say 48-year-old Darryl Thomas was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. There's no immediate word on whether he has an attorney. Police say charges could also be brought against the passenger. She wasn't immediately identified.
Delaney says a woman flagged down state and local police officers around 4 p.m. to report that she had been assaulted by someone who fled in a maroon SUV. Police began pursuing a vehicle matching that description.
Delaney says that when the officers approached the SUV on foot, the driver spun the vehicle around and accelerated. The officers dove out of the way, then opened fire.
