Police Shoot Getaway Driver, Alleged Bank Robber On The Run
EVERETT (CBS) - A man is hospitalized and a bank robbery suspect remains at large after police say the injured man acted as a get-away driver, and then drove at an Everett police officer, who subsequently shot the driver.
The unidentified injured man is being questioned by police, and is reportedly in stable condition at Mass General Hospital.
This all took place Thursday afternoon, shortly after 2p.m., when police responded to the Century Bank for a reported bank robbery. The suspect accused of the robbery fled from the Route 16 bank on foot, and then according to police, jumped into a nearby waiting car.
The operator of the car then sped off, and accelerated towards an officer standing in front of the car ordering it to stop.
WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports
When the car did not stop, the officer shot his firearm, striking the driver. The getaway car then fled the scene. The car, along with the driver, were later tracked by officials to Central Street in Saugus.
Officials believe the suspect ditched out of the car before it was located in Saugus. The Everett Police, Massachusetts State Police, the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office are all investigating.
