Police Seek Man Who Installed Skimmer At NH ATM
PORTSMOUTH, NH (CBS) – Portsmouth, New Hampshire Police are investigating a case of skimming at a Market Square ATM.
The skimming device was installed on a Bank of America ATM for four days between July 14th and July 18th. It was discovered by a customer and reported to police.
They are looking for the public's help identifying the suspect who was captured on surveillance.
It's still unknown how much money may have been lost or how much information was gathered, but Portsmouth Police Captain Mike Schwartz says skimming is a crime that is on the rise. Tourist towns are especially vulnerable.
"It has to do with the distraction factor, people are busy, it's unfamiliar surroundings, so they're not having that same awareness," Schwartz said.
A similar scam at a Martha's Vineyard ATM netted more than $100,000.
Schwartz says ATM customers need to look closely at the machine. There are some telltale signs that a skimming device has been planted. Customers should look for adhesive, as many of the devices are attached using glue or double sided tape. Also, while most of the slots for swiping cards are slanted inward, a skimming device will bulge out because it sits over the slot.
