Police Search For Hit & Run Driver, Try To ID Injured Cyclist
Update: The victim has been able to identify himself. Police are still searching for the driver.
MANCHESTER, N.H. (CBS) - It is a hit and run mystery. Manchester, New Hampshire police are trying to identify a bicyclist in critical condition after being struck by a hit and run driver.
It happened around 6pm Tuesday at the intersection of Beech and Sagamore streets.
Tim Whitney witnessed the crash from his window and it still upsets him. He saw a man riding this bicycle across the street hit by a driver who took off.
WBZ-TV's Lauren Leamanczyk reports
"I saw the bicycle go flying and he kind of went up on the hood of the car," Whitney explained.
He rushed down to help the victim who was bleeding badly. Tim got a look at the car which stopped briefly before it sped off. He says there's no way the driver didn't know he hit someone.
"Somewhere on the front of that car there's some damage and there's got to be blood. There was a lot of blood."
Even more disturbing, no one knows who the victim is.
"At this point, the bicyclist was not able to communicate with officers. We have not been able to identify him," said Lt. Maureen Tessier of the Manchester Police Department. "We are hoping people may recognize the clothing description as well as the bicycle."
Police distributed a picture of the bike and a description of the victim. They say he's a white male in between the ages of 30 and 40. He's 5'7 and 225 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a gray hooded Patagonia jacket, a button up Disney sweatshirt with the words "Tigger" and "Always Bouncing" written across the chest, and a Boston Red Sox t-shirt.
The victim is still unconscious. For a while, Tim worried he might die. Now he hopes someone turns in the driver who took off without even checking if he was OK.
"It's aggravating to think someone could be that careless to know they hurt someone and then just take off," he said.
The car is described as a gray or green four door sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry. There may have been two people inside.
The public is asked to call 603-668-8711, ext. 479 with tips.
