Police Release Sketch Of Suspect In Brockton Beating Death Of Minister

BROCKTON (CBS) - Exactly two weeks since a 74-year-old minister was beaten to death in Brockton, the Plymouth County District Attorney released a sketch of a suspect. He's believed to be Hispanic or Cape Verdean, 5'10 to 6' tall with a black ponytail.

"Just keeping my head up above the water so I won't sink," the victim's wife told WBZ. When we showed Francise Harmon the sketch of her husband's alleged killer, this was her reaction. "I thought I'd seen him before," she said.

WBZ-TV's Bobby Sisk reports

It was this past Sunday at a fundraiser to help pay for Lee Harmon's funeral. A man, who she says looked like the one in the sketch, came up to her car. "I know he had the hat on and he said to me you know, I'm sorry about your loss and I said whoever did it, God will pay them," she recalled.

Francise isn't 100 percent sure it's the same guy, but if it was him, her daughter Bernice says the man has a lot of nerve. "It's just terrible. I'm like, how dare you because if you did this to my father for no reason," said Bernice. She isn't sure what provoked the attack on her dad, but says he would've voluntarily handed over anything he had.

It was the night of August 20th. Harmon was riding his bicycle back from cleaning his disabled daughter's house when he was savagely beaten along Clinton Street. He died at the hospital, roughly 20 minutes from the first call to 911.

A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, talked with him until the ambulance arrived. "I was trying to make sure that he knew that someone was there and like, help is on the way. I lied to him and told him he'd be alright," the man said. "But I was hoping he'd be alright at the time."

The neighbor also thinks he's seen someone suspicious since then, but isn't sure it's the same guy in the drawing. "Yes and he keeps looking at my house and he keeps looking at where it happened," the neighbor said.

Her husband of 57 years taken from her, Francise just wants the killer off the streets. "I hope they find him. I just hope they find him because he deserves to be behind bars," she said.

Police won't comment further on the sketch or how they got the description of the man. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call investigators at 508-923-4205.
