Police Officer, Good Samaritan Save Woman From Acushnet Pond
ACUSHNET (CBS) - A police officer and a brave civilian are being called heroes for saving the life of a woman trapped inside a sinking car.
The victim somehow drove into a pond. Her gray Saturn was sinking fast into deep water. Ryan Moore was driving home from work down Lake Street in Acushnet when he saw a police cruiser pulled to the side of the road and heard the woman's screams.
"There was a car over there probably 50, 70 feet out. It was in the water," he explained. "All you could see was the back window and somebody was yelling 'Help! Help! Come help me."
Moore and Acushnet Police Officer Derek Cathcart both jumped into the pond and swam toward the sinking car.
Moore says at first they opened the a couple doors but could not see the woman. Finally, when the car was almost completely submerged, he saw her arm.
"A hand came out. That's all I could see at this point. The car was sinking fast, I could just see the back window, everything was under water," Moore says. "I grabbed her there and pulled her out the back."
Moore and Cathcard carried the woman to shore. He says she thanked him for saving her life.
The woman is in the hospital recovering from her injuries.
Moore says the moment was "humbling", but like most heroes, he brushes off the label.
"If that was me, I would hope someone would be quick, like the cop was or like me."
