DORCHESTER - A shooting in the middle of the afternoon in Dorchester has residents concerned about violence. The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. at the corner of Paxton and Harvard Streets.
The victim, 35-year-old Elijah Pinckney of Dorchester, was pronounced dead at the scene.
District Attorney Kevin Hayden said the time of day the shooting occurred is concerning. "Another brazen shooting in the middle of the day," Hayden said. "We simply have too many guns."
Neighbor Rene Weathers said the neighborhood is usually quiet. She's worried about the violence as there is a youth center and school right nearby.
"There's a home right there with kids, literally right there," said Weathers. "It's the middle of the day and people get shot for no reason."
Another neighbor, Terri Callistro, said she's hurt by the loss.
"When I came out here today, it just broke me down to see that it was someone, some other child, some father, brother, husband laying out there dead," Callistro said. "It really hurt."
Harvard and Paxton Streets were blocked off for most of the day as investigators combed the area using evidence markers and police dogs.
DA Hayden said he's concerned about the violence being so close to children. "We have a youth center right nearby, obviously we need to continue to be vigilant," Hayden said.
Neighbors told WBZ the shootings are becoming too common.
"They need to get the guns off the street," said Weathers.
Boston Police are asking for the community's help in bringing in tips. They do not have a suspect at this time.
