Police Investigate Deadly Cape Cod Crash
HARWICH (CBS) --- State Police are investigating a deadly crash on Cape Cod.
Eighteen-year-old Michael Lawrence of Barnstable was killed when his car slammed into a tree on Route 6 eastbound in Harwich around 12:45 a.m. Sunday.
State police say Lawrence and a second vehicle were racing prior to the crash.
As a result, the driver of the second vehicle, Adrian Sterling, 18, of Hyannis, was issued a criminal complaint. Lawrence's friend has been charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, and racing a motor vehicle. He was operating a 2000 Toyota Camry Solara coupe at the time of the crash.
On Sunday, Lawrence's family members said he was loved by many people. Family and friends are completely devastated over the fatal weekend crash, they said.
"I don't know details of the accident. This is a really hard time for us, and I just want people to know Michael was a really great kid and I love him," his mother, Beth Davis, said tearfully.
Police said Lawrence and Sterling were speeding eastbound on Route 6 when the Barnstable teen lost control of his car and crashed into a tree. "Preliminary results show us that he and his friend were speeding or drag racing when he lost control and crashed," Harwich Poice Sgt. Kevin Considine.
Friends gathered Sunday at Lawrence's house in Barnstable. His best friend, Corey Woolfolk, said his buddy had a heart of gold. "He just put a smile on your face no matter, so that's what I will definitely remember," Woolfolk said.
Davis asked for people not to judge her son but to pray for his family, which is overcome with grief. "Please on twitter and facebook don't leave any negative comments. I'm heart broken. I just want my son back," Davis said.
