Police Identify Gloucester Drowning Victims
GLOUCESTER (AP) — Authorities have identified the two people who died after slipping into the ocean off the coast of Gloucester last weekend as a Rhode Island man and a local woman he and his wife had been visiting.
Police say David Machado and Kristen Mayo-Machado, of Providence, R.I., were visiting their friend, 46-year-old Evelyn Howe, on Sunday when the trio decided to take a walk on the rocky coastline of the city's picturesque Eastern Point.
Authorities say the 48-year-old Machado slipped from a rock into the 50-degree water and Howe went in after him in a rescue attempt.
When they didn't emerge, Mayo-Machado called 911. Gloucester police pulled the two bodies from the water about 40 minutes after that call. They were both declared dead at the hospital.
