Somerville Man Cited For Cambridge Hit & Run Crash
CAMBRIDGE (CBS) – The driver who struck an elderly woman in a wheelchair and drove away from the scene has been found by Cambridge Police.
The driver, only identified as a 62-year-old Somerville man, has been issued a citation for leaving the scene of personal injury.
The crash happened around 4:40 a.m. Sunday in the area of Columbia and Lincoln streets. Dorothy Steele, 77, was hit by a car while she was on Columbia.
Surveillance video shows the car, described as a Ford Taurus, travelling from Cambridge into Somerville. Police said the car may have sustained front-end damage.
As of Friday morning, Steele remained in a hospital in critical condition.
Liz Olson, who helped Steele find a place to live a few years ago, says she always enjoyed seeing her around the neighborhood.
"It's really sad that someone wouldn't be watching out better for the pedestrians," Olson told WBZ-TV's Susie Steimle on Friday.
The accident over the weekend wasn't the first time Steele has been hit by a vehicle while crossing the street, according to Olson.
She says Steele was hit by a truck, which led to her moving to the Inman Square area.
The Middlesex District Attorney's Office says the incident remains under investigation.
