Police: Hyannis Man Tried To Firebomb Restaurant, Could Face Deportation
BARNSTABLE (CBS) - A Hyannis man is being held without bail and could be deported after police say he tried to firebomb a Brazilian restaurant in Barnstable.
Police say Friday morning, the owner of Prova Brazil on Main Street in Hyannis reported that his restaurant's window had been smashed out the night before.
Surveillance video from the restaurant showed a person on a moped attempting to light a Molotov cocktail-type bottle and throwing it at the restaurant around 1:30 a.m. The bottle broke, but did ignite. The suspect then picked up a brick and threw that through the window.
Responding officers found the smashed bottle and some liquid at the scene. After looking at the surveillance video, they put out a description for the suspect.
A patrolman recognized immediately recognized the description as being that of Lucas Penna, 43, whom he "had some police interaction with" a month earlier.
That officer, who was on a work detail, actually spotted Penna driving his moped on Main Street.
Penna was arrested and charged with willful injury to a building, possession of an infernal machine/Molotov cocktail, and attempt to burn.
Police say Penna talked to investigators after his arrest, but did not reveal a motive.
According to Barnstable police, Penna is a Brazilian citizen in the United States on a visa. The Department of Homeland Security ICE unit was contacted, and placed a detainer on Penna.
He will be be arraigned on Monday in a Barnstable court.
