Police: Elderly Driver Crashes Into Melrose High Lot

MELROSE (CBS) --- Police say a car being driven by an elderly woman crashed through a fence and into the parking lot of Melrose High School.

It happened Tuesday morning along Melrose Street.

Police do not know what led to the crash, but say the 85-year-old woman drove through the barrier separating the Melrose Towers Condominium Complex from the high school, striking several cars in the school's lower lot. The woman had been visiting a friend at the complex.

Students were in class at the time and no one was injured.

The crash was reported to police by the OnStar system in the woman's car.

Math teacher Dawn Van Blenis' brand new car was one of the eight damaged.

"If this was at 7:30 in the morning, 100 kids would have been walking on that street and teachers would have been getting in and out of their cars," she said.

Investigators say the elderly woman must have been going at least 40 miles-per-hour at the time she hit the cars.

The woman was taken to the hospital as a precaution but police do not believe she's badly hurt.

Police are investigating the crash but say charges are unlikely.
