Police: Hit & Run Driver Moved Victim To Sidewalk Before Fleeing

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – A New Bedford man has been charged in a hit-and-run where the elderly victim was dragged to the side of the road before the driver fled the scene.

Seventy-six-year-old Rafael Velasquez was struck by a Cadillac Tuesday afternoon as he crossed Rockdale Avenue.

Police said the driver stopped, but only to move Velasquez to the sidewalk before driving away.

Witnesses called police who eventually tracked down the Cadillac to a home on Pamela Drive.

It had a damaged windshield and dents on the hood, according to investigators.

Police arrested 45-year-old Arthur Larrivee and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license.

But Velasquez died Tuesday night at Rhode Island Hospital.

The Bristol County District Attorney's office is now involved and Larrivee will likely face more serious charges.
