Police Cracking Down On DUI, Distracted Driving On Labor Day Weekend

ANDOVER (CBS) – State Police are cracking down on distracted driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during Labor Day weekend.

This weekend, Massachusetts State Police will increase patrols and sobriety checkpoints to help prevent fatal car crashes. No deaths were reported during a similar effort last year, WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Carl Stevens reported.

The increased patrols are in cooperation with a current distracted driving program, police said. During the program, which began last year, police issued more than 3,000 citations in two previous mobilizations, Massachusetts Highway Safety Division Director Art Kinsman told WBZ NewsRadio.

"It's proven that this enforcement does work. People do pay attention to it," Kinsman said.
