Police Arrest Driver In Westwood Hit & Run That Left Woman Hurt, Dog Dead
WESTWOOD (CBS) - Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run crash that occurred Monday night in Westwood.
Authorities say 47-year-old Donald Gentile struck a 26-year-old woman as she walked her dog on Washington Street at around 9 p.m.
The woman survived the crash but was seriously injured. She is still in intensive care. Her dog was killed.
On Wednesday night, a police recruit saw a car fitting the description of the one involved in the crash, snapped some photos and got the license plate number before alerting authorities.
Officers then contacted Gentile, who first told them the damage to his car was from an old accident. Then, he said he believed he hit something on Monday on Washington Street.
By the time police reached Gentile, he had replaced his busted windshield in what prosecutors say was an effort to cover up the crime.
Officers said they recovered forensic evidence from the car, tying Gentile to the crime.
Gentile is charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene. After his arraignment Thursday morning, he was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail.
He was charged with domestic assault and battery in a separate case back in March.
