Plus/Minus: Smith, Kelly Lead Bruins To Win Over Flyers
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Bruins started their 2014-15 season off with a victory, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 at the TD Garden thanks to a late goal by veteran Chris Kelly.
98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones broke it all down following the game, with his Plus/Minus from the win:
Plus
Reilly Smith
Smith scored the first goal of the new season on a nice backdoor feed from Carl Soderberg on the power play.
"He was a holdout in the preseason, but looked like he was in mid-season form in this one," Jones said of Smith.
Chris Kelly
Kelly scored the game-winning goal with 1:51 left in the game, knocking in an Adam McQuaid shot.
"He also contributed in the face-off circle. Carl Soderberg wasn't very effective on that line, so Kelly stepped up and won six of 11 face-offs," noted Jones. "He also scored in the season opener against Tampa a year ago, so it's the second straight year he gets it started on the right foot."
Bobby Robins
The 32-year-old career minor leaguer was very effective in his NHL debut, and got into a fight in the second period.
"He made his debut here at 32 and led the Bruins with five hits tonight. He also got the attention of the fans at the TD Garden when he dropped the gloves with Luke Schenn," said Jones. "I thought there was going to be a different look on the fourth line, but tonight looked very familiar. But it was a nice debut for Bobby Robins."
Minus
Second Period
Boston was held to just six shots in a very lackadaisical second period.
"They started to let their foot off the gas a little bit, which led to a Sean Couturier goal early in the third."
Lucic Line
The Milan Lucic-Ryan Spooner-Matt Fraser line didn't do much of anything in the season opener.
"I thought that line was totally invisible. Lucic didn't have a shot or a hit for the Bruins," said Jones. "He, Spooner and Fraser combined for just three shots on nets and a couple of hits. There wasn't much out of that line."
Dougie Hamilton
It was a rough night for the defenseman, who made several questionable decisions throughout.
"Lot of questionable decision-making, including late in the first period which led to Tuukka Rask needing to make a big save. Hamilton pinches up on a two-on-one Schenn and Jakub Voraceck going the other way," noted Jones. "He also had a rough shift to start the second where he couldn't clear the zone, it was he and Chara pinned back for two-plus minutes which cause Claude Julien to use a timeout."
