Plainville 7th Grader In Finals Of National Geographic Bee
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS) -- A seventh grader from Plainville has advanced to the final round of the 23rd annual National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C.
Karthik Karnik, 13, of King Philip Middle School, was one of the top ten finishers Tuesday. There were 54 competitors who took part in the preliminary round.
Karnik was one of the top scorers in the New England Math League competition, he plays the trumpet in the school band, and he likes playing chess, tennis and soccer.
The first prize in the Geographic Bee is a $25,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
Karnik and his nine remaining competitors will be going for this prize Wednesday.
