Pit Bull Tears Off Part Of Bridgewater Grandmother's Face
BRIDGEWATER (CBS) — A grandmother from Bridgewater is slowly recovering from a horrific pit bull attack in which she lost part of her face.
Police say 71-year-old Normanda Torres was attacked for no reason by her grandson's 50-pound dog as she stood at a kitchen sink late Thursday morning.
The pit bull bit off part of her nose and mouth before her 20-year-old grandson Daniel Joseph could stop it.
She was rushed to Brigham and Women's Hospital for surgery.
After such attacks, dogs are usually quarantined for 10 days. But surgeons at the Brigham wanted the dog put down immediately because they needed the pieces of Torres' face that the dog had bitten off. Those pieces were in the pit bull's stomach.
"The surgery on the dog was performed at West Bridgewater animal hospital. The vital pieces were retrieved and were transported to the emergency room of Brigham & Women's Hospital by Bridgewater Police," Police Lt. Thomas Schlatz said in a statement Friday.
The dog, which was a year-and-a-half-old, had bitten someone on two previous occasions, police said, but those were considered minor incidents.
