Flight instructor killed by propellor at Beverly Airport
Investigators say the head flight instructor at Beverly Airport was killed after being struck by the propellor of his own plane.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters says the accident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday as two single-engine planes were awaiting clearance to take off from the general aviation airport about 25 miles northeast of Boston.
The Essex District Attorney's office said 30-year-old Michael Costales, of Weymouth, got out of his aircraft to help the other pilot who was having trouble with the canopy that covers the cockpit. As Costales walked toward the second plane, he was struck and killed by the propellor of his own plane.
Officials said Costales had worked at Beverly Airport for ten years.
State and federal officials are investigating. :
