Phone Scammers Offer To Help Settle Red Light Ticket

BOSTON (CBS) – A new phone scam is making the rounds, and apparently it's catching people off guard. The caller claiming to be a police officer says you have an overdue red light camera fine.

He offers to help you pay the ticket in order to avoid a larger fine, court case, or even jail. All you have to do is give him your credit card information.

Sure enough, the call is a hoax.

Paula Fleming at the Better Business Bureau says never ever give your personal information to someone who calls you.

"If someone's calling, emailing; you never want to provide your personal information," she said, "because you don't know who is on the other end of that email or phone call."

Fleming says if you can, try and find out as much information as possible about the caller, so real law enforcement can track them down.
