Government Proposes Letting Passengers Make In-Flight Phone Calls

BOSTON (CBS) – A new proposal by the Federal Transportation Department would allow passengers to make mid-air phone calls during their flights.

The plan is being studied and a final decision is still years away,

But as WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe reports, a lot of people are already expressing very strong feelings about the idea of in-flight calling.

A lot of passengers at Logan Airport said they don't want to hear the person next to them yakking on their phones about their personal problems or the business deal they're working on, especially when they're sitting in such close quarters in an airplane.

"I think we can disconnect for while we're in the air," one flyer said. "To have flights filled with talking people would be a miserable experience."

But one businesswoman told WBZ NewsRadio she's really excited about the possible change.

"It's just really tough to lose three to five hours in a day when you're trying to work, so making phone calls would be fantastic," she said.
