Phantom Gourmet: Ice Cream Sundae Cone Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) – Phantom recently purchased four packages of ice cream sundae cones from a local supermarket.  So which one is at the top of the food chain?

The cool contenders were Blue Bunny, Drumstick, Friendly's, and Hood.

Hood finished in last place. The package touts this as the official ice cream cone of the Boston Red Sox, but the product inside is a swing and a miss.

On the surface, this chocolate dipped sundae cone topped with peanuts looks decent enough, but after just a couple of soggy bites, things fall apart… literally.  And each bite only continues to compromise its structural integrity.

Next up is Friendly's. This four pack features sundae cones that were part delicious, and part disappointing. The premium vanilla ice cream is the best of the bunch by far.  The thin chocolate coating provides a nice snap.

And while the 'crunchies' on top are not actually that crunchy, they do deliver good flavor. The problem here is the cone.  It's more chewy than crisp, leaving phantom with an unsatisfying eating experience.

The runner up is Drumstick. Straight out of the box, the clear plastic wrapping provides an eye popping tease of the sweet treat to come. It also lets you see all the pieces of peanuts that have fallen off the cone before you've even opened the package.

Hefty in the hand, the first few bites of this thick ice cream satisfy. But the real treat comes at the cone.  A generous chocolate lining on the inside not only keeps it crisp, but also imparts plenty of rich flavor.

At the top of the food chain is Blue Bunny. Proving bigger isn't always better, these cute mini cones earn the top spot for their well-rounded ice cream cone execution.  The ice cream is smooth with great vanilla flavor. The chocolate coating is thick and rich. And the sugar cone is sweet and crunchy, with a delicious chocolate nugget hiding at the bottom.

That's why blue bunny vanilla mini swirls are at the top of the food chain.
