Phantom Gourmet: Great 8 'Off The Beaten Path' Restaurants
Sometimes the best restaurants are the hardest to find. So Phantom did some homework and found the 8 Greatest restaurants that are off the beaten path.
Rye Tavern
Plymouth
Kicking off the Ggreat 8 is Rye Tavern in Plymouth. Down a dirt road, through a forest of pine trees and across a field you'll find this quaint cottage serving some of the finest fare on the South Shore.
The locally sourced menu changes all of the time, but you can always find their deconstructed clam chowder and a big juicy burger, served on buttery brioche and topped with Vermont cheddar cheese.
Ted's
Meriden, CT
Ted's in Meriden, Connecticut is a road trip all burger fanatics must make. This family owned lunch counter has been serving a delicacy called the 'steamed' cheeseburger since 1959. No grilling or flame-broiling here. Each and every burger is hand-packed and hand-crafted using a custom-built cabinet, where not only is the burger steamed, but also is the extra gooey cheese.
Oregon Club
Ashland
The Oregon Club in Ashland is as rich in tasty food as it is in history. It started out as an inn, turned into a speakeasy, and eventually into a members-only club. But now that it's open to the public, everybody can experience their legendary sirloin steak, still cooked in the original 100-year-old pans.
Taso's Euro Café
Norwood
Taso's Euro Cafe in Norwood is a casual Greek restaurant, tucked away in a quirky spot next to Norwood airport. Here they serve authentic Spanakopita loaded with fresh spinach and feta, and Pasticcio layered with noodles, beef and béchamel. This place prides itself on their hand-tossed pizza with buttery, crispy crust, but Phantom's a fan of their tender marinated kabobs served alongside fluffy pita, fresh veggies and rice.

Inn at Bay Pointe
Quincy
Inn at Bay Pointe in Quincy might be the biggest and best restaurant you've never been to. It's down a residential side street, overlooking the water and just steps from a marina. Once you arrive, you can get lost again in a menu over loaded with all the classic comfort foods you love - like baked stuffed lobster, succulent surf and turf and an overloaded fisherman's platter.
Dudley Chateau
Wayland
Another Great 8 winner is the Dudley Chateau. Overlooking Dudley Pond in Wayland, this local watering hole has provided decades of food and fun with absolutely no attitude. This 80-year-old institution has been everything from a fishing lodge to a speakeasy, and has collected relics along the way. The menu is full of hearty classics, like crispy fried steak and cheese eggrolls and burgers almost too big to eat.
Blue Ox
Lynn
The Blue Ox brings the style and sophistication of the South End to an out of the way side street in downtown Lynn. This upscale neighborhood eatery has blue walls, cool paintings, and tasty, affordable, American cuisine. Appetizers include creamy baked Brie, stuffed with apricots, figs, and cranberries, and spicy tuna tartar with chive cream and homemade potato chips. And while there are upscale entrees like Herb Roasted Chicken and Grilled Pork Tenderloin, Phantom always orders double Blue Ox burgers, bursting with gorgonzola cheese.
KO Pies
East Boston
Rounding out the Great 8 is KO Pies, where they serve authentic Australian street food in the back of an East Boston shipyard. Once you get past the security gate and drive through the working waterfront area, you'll find a cute spot with picnic tables out front, and an Outback-inspired industrial space inside. The house specialty is the Australian meat pie, loaded up with a variety meats and vegetables covered in flaky crust.
