Phantom Gourmet: Boneheads Wing Bar In West Warwick, RI

WEST WARWICK, RI - There's no doubt about it, the folks at Boneheads are wild about wings. Located in West Warwick, Rhode Island, this lively rock n' roll inspired wing joint is decked out in with drum lights and album covers, while a projector plays vintage concerts and music videos.

"Boneheads Wing Bar is the definitive stop for wings in all of the land," co-owner Matt Corona said confidently.

"Does it make it sound conceited to say that we have the best wings ever? But we definitely have the best wings ever," added his partner Joanne Casale. "We're here to take over the wing world."

Matt, Joanne, and Dave Fazzina are the music loving, wing eating trio behind Boneheads, who joined forces to create an over the top menu of serious finger foods. You can usually find Joanne and Matt working the busy dining room while Dave is out back making sure the kitchen is producing wing perfection.

"59 different favors of wet sauces, 25 different dry rubs," Matt declared.

With so many flavors offered on the bone and off, it can get confusing. So they've arranged them all on a nifty chart called The Boneboard.

"It's modeled after the Billboard top 100 and we have it broken up in a way where if you want something hot, we have a section of hot. If you want something sweet, we have a section of sweet. And if you want something that's different, we have a whole section called remix," explained Matt.

If you're looking for something spicy, order the Hot For Teacher, slathered in a hot house Buffalo sauce. For something sweet, there's Frosted Cinnamon Bun dry rub, drizzled with vanilla glaze.

If you want a mashup of breakfast and bar food, order the Breakfast at Tiffany's wings, coated with a maple brown sugar sauce and then sprinkled with bacon.

"Immediately you get the brown sugar, the maple. There's' some cinnamon in there. And as you get it swirling around in your mouth, that extra bit of candied bacon just hits you really hard and it's really, really tasty," described Matt.

For something visually stunning and tasty too, there's the Smells Like Teen Spirit, coated in a golden Carolina barbecue sauce and drizzled with balsamic reduction.

"It looks really cool on the plate. It's really like a bright orange color with the stripes down it, and the flavor is unbelievable. You would never think to put a balsamic reduction on top of this chicken, but it's so good," Matt said.

The outrageous menu goes way beyond wings. There's deep fried corn on the cob, and pork riblets slathered in sauce, or something called High Hats, which layers a cheeseburger ravioli, lettuce and tomato on a skewer. For a pileup of potato perfection, try the Mosh Pits, a play on potato skins loaded with buffalo chicken dip, cheese and bacon, and then baked until bubbly.

"When you're moshing at a show and everything's just kind of smashing around and stuff, and we were like, 'Let's take tater skins and smash them together with the buffalo chicken dip,'" Joanne explained.

Nothing beats the larger than life Twisted Sister Nachos, stacked with buffalo chicken, pulled pork and plenty of cheese for one massive, mouthwatering mess.

"Our nachos are so big that we had no choice but to make them a double layer. So, what we do is, we set two standard layers that you would get at a normal restaurant in the oven, and then when we pull them out. We layer than on top of each other," explained Matt. "Once you get past that first half of chips, where you would normally run out of cheese and toppings, there's a whole other layer of extra cheese and extra toppings right underneath that for you."

Just as jaw dropping is Bonehead's half-pound Megadeath Burger, topped with fried pickles, fried tomatoes, mozzarella moons, fried jalapenos and onion rings.

"Anything fried that we could put on top of it, we just kept piling on," Matt said.

If you thought the regular menu was out there, just wait until dessert when you can get eye popping cheesecakes spiked with fruity pebbles and pop rocks; and ice cream sandwiches made with thick Belgian Waffles and topped with rainbow sprinkles and a maple cinnamon sauce.

The Boneheads team continues to come up with more sauces and specials to make sure they wow their customers, day after day.

"Nothing is off limits," Joanne said. "We have tried things that failed miserably. We're like, 'Ooh that sounded really good, didn't really work out.' And then we're like, 'That sounds kind of crazy and totally worked out.' No idea is too out there."

You can find Boneheads at 131 Washington Street in West Warwick, Rhode Island, and online at boneheadwings.com.
