Phantom Gourmet: Avenue N, Rumford, RI
RUMFORD, RI (CBS) - He's one of New England's best young chefs.
Nick Rabar has been a star on the Rhode Island restaurant scene for more than a decade, and now he's opened his own restaurant - Avenue N in Rumford.
Located in a restored factory building just five minutes outside of Providence, Avenue N serves real deal Regional American cuisine, that tastes great and makes you feel warm all over.
"We sort of stay true to what real American food is, and we have a good time while we're doing it," he said.
So appetizers include Rhode Island Calamari, Maryland Lump Crab Cakes and New York Style Reuben Sliders.
"Everything on that dish we make.~ We make our own sweet and sour cabbage, we make our own thousand island dressing, we griddle the bread, put the Gruyère cheese on top. Everything's from scratch," Rabar said.
Reasonably priced entrees range from steak and roast chicken, to a killer burger and slow cooked short ribs.
There's even grilled pizza that's part Big Apple, and part Little Rhody.
"As a native New Yorker, I wanted to do something that was a little bit different, so we still grill the pizza, but it's not that super thin cracker crust, it's got some bend to it, it's got some bite to it, it's got some chew to it. So it's more like a grilled New York style pizza which is something that you don't see everyday out here. And then all the toppings are fresh as can be," Rabar said.
And no matter when you make your way to Avenue N, Chef Nick will always be there to make sure everything is perfect.
"You're gonna find me in the kitchen Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night. I'm always back there, I'm always overseeing every dish, and I'm always having fun while I'm doing it," he said.
