Peyton Manning Breaks Tom Brady's Record For Single-Season Touchdown Record
BOSTON (CBS) -- Move over, Tom Brady. Peyton Manning is back on top.
Manning regained his spot atop the record books for most touchdown passes in a single season on Sunday, throwing four touchdowns to bring his season total to 51.
In doing so, Manning set a new record for most touchdown passes in a single season, a mark that was taken from him by Brady in 2007. That year, Brady threw his 50th touchdown in the fourth quarter in Week 17. Manning set the new mark in Week 16.
"I really celebrate it with the team," Manning said in an interview on the field with CBS after the game. "That was a very special moment, all my teammates and coaches coming out and greeting me. This is a team accomplishment. A lot of receivers caught a lot of touchdown, a lot of great play calls by [offensive coordinator] Adam Gase, and good protection, defense getting us the ball and giving us the opportunities. So I really celebrated with the team.
Manning initially set the record back in 2004, when he threw for 48 touchdowns. That year, he broke Dan Marino's record of 48 touchdowns, a record that was set in 1984 and stood for two decades.
In Week 17, the Broncos will play the Oakland Raiders, who entered Week 16 having allowed the third-most touchdown passes in the NFL.
"It's probably just a temporary record -- Brady will probably break it next year," Manning said. "So we'll enjoy it while it lasts, but I really feel like it's a team accomplishment."
