Peter Gammons Says Alex Rodriguez Is 'Like The Marathon Bombers'
BOSTON (CBS) -- Longtime baseball writer Peter Gammons may find himself in a bit of hot water after his most recent comments about the ongoing Alex Rodriguez saga.
Gammons was a guest on Mike Lupica's ESPN Radio show on Thursday and was asked what the end game is for Rodriguez, who stormed out of his arbitration hearing Wednesday before showing up for an impromptu interview on Mike Francesa's radio program.
"I've had people with the Yankees say this to me, he is just -- he wants to blow up the world. You know, he's like the marathon bombers," Gammons said. "It's just, he's going to get them."
Gammons was referencing the Tsarnaev brothers, who allegedly planted bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon in April, killing three people and injuring more than 250 others.
Shortly after the statement made the rounds online, Gammons apologized via Twitter.
"It was a stupid, poorly worded [comparison] of blowing up a process. Alex would never hurt a human. I hope I haven't hurt him," Gammons said. "He is owed, and gets my apology for mispeaking."
It's the second time in a week that the marathon bombings have made headlines. Last week, TV host Bill Maher drew criticism for saying to the city of Boston, "Your city was not leveled by Godzilla."
Gammons, 68, is a Massachusetts native and spent decades covering baseball for The Boston Globe. In 2004, Gammons was honored with the J.G. Taylor Spink Award by the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
