Salem Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man In Buttocks
SALEM (CBS) - Salem Police say one of their officers shot a man who was armed with a knife early Tuesday morning.
Investigators said the incident began just before 2 a.m. when 21-year-old Brock Fleming stabbed a man in the forearm and neck on Salem Street.
The man called police, identified his attacker as Fleming and then was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.
Officers found Fleming armed with a knife on Walter Street around 5 a.m.
"Mr. Fleming came at one of the officers with the knife forcing that officer to draw his weapon," Salem police said in a statement.
"Mr. Fleming then turned toward the other officer while still holding the knife and approaching him in a threatening manner. The first officer then fired striking Mr. Fleming in the buttocks."
Fleming was captured and taken to North Shore Medical Center where he had surgery for the gunshot wound.
He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Two knives were recovered on Walter Street.
Investigators said Fleming had a prior history with police.
"He's been in the system for stupid little things, breaking into cars or something like that. But you would never think that it would come down to blood," said April Huntly, a woman who knows Fleming.
The Essex District Attorney's Office is looking into the shooting.
No other information is available at this point in the investigation.
