Peace Garden Honoring Marathon Bombing Victims, Survivors Opens In Medford
MEDFORD (CBS) -- It's a remarkable oasis and a place of peace.
The Krystle Campbell Peace Garden opened in Medford Sunday, named in memory of the Medford High School graduate who died in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. The garden is a tribute to the four people killed in the attacks along with the hundreds of survivors and first responders.
"It's going to be a place that brings us all together," said Medford Mayor Stephanie Muccini Burke.
It's a garden of sunflowers and flowing waters. The fountain is the central feature. Plaques with their names are embedded in bronze and surrounded by words that define them: Courage, strength, dignity, leadership, and honor. It is inspired by a young woman who stood for all these virtues and more.
"It provides an opportunity for young people to reflect to whats important in life," said Medford Superintendent Roy Belson.
Krystle Campbell's parents visited the garden privately last week with WBZ-TV's Lisa Hughes. On Sunday, they were on hand for the unveiling of this haven in the center of downtown Medford for all to enjoy.
It took a year and a half to build and maintain the peace garden, but its impact will last forever.
