Hernandez 'Heartbroken' By Super Bowl Loss
INDIANAPOLIS (CBS) - New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez had very few words to say after the team's 21-17 Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants.
Asked how he feels, he simply responded "Heartbroken."
Hernandez led the Patriots with eight receptions for 67 yards and scored a touchdown early in the third quarter that put New England up 17-9.
It would end up being the last time the Patriots found the end zone in their second Super Bowl loss in five years.
"They made more plays than us," he said of the Giants, who scored a touchdown with 57 seconds remaining to seal the victory. "We've got to make more plays."
Hernandez was the target on New England's final play, a Hail Mary with time expiring. He was unable to come up with the ball, and the Patriots are going home without a championship.
"We knew it was going to be a toss-up and I saw it in the air. The defender got up more than me," he said.
Asked what stood out most in the loss, his answer was very simple.
"That we should have won."
Hernandez targeted 14 times, four times on New England's final drive. Only one of those targets resulted in a completion.
"Yeah it hurt. We had to make more plays," he repeated.
